About us
Duncan Mackay and Sons Ltd was established in 1951
Rooted in the engineering background of its founder, Duncan Mackay, who returned to the Isle of Lewis after studying in Glasgow. Starting out as a self-employed agricultural contractor, Duncan quickly gained a reputation for reliability and hard work, expanding into seeding, sand spreading, and concrete block manufacturing. His growing success led to a contract with the local Council to install street lighting-his first major public works job-which opened the door to further projects across Lewis and Harris.
As his sons grew up, the family business evolved, with two of them, Iain Hector and ‘Buddy’, remaining on the island to help expand and modernise the company. Duncan took great pride in seeing the business develop into the thriving civil engineering firm it is today, grounded in the same values of quality and commitment that shaped its beginnings.
